Every October, Northern New Jersey comes alive with fall foliage, festive events, and—if you believe the legends—a few lingering spirits. From eerie tales in historic libraries to strange sightings in coastal lighthouses, the Garden State has no shortage of ghost stories that add to its charm. Whether you’re a skeptic, a believer, or just in the mood for a seasonal thrill, these stories remind us that our communities are rich with folklore and history.
According to New Jersey lore, one of the state’s most infamous legends was born in the Pinelands back in the 1700s. The story centers on a woman known as Mother Leeds, who was said to have cursed her thirteenth child. Instead of a healthy baby, the tale describes a winged creature with hooves and a shriek that echoed through the woods.
Residents of the Pine Barrens have reported strange noises, unexplained shadows, and even fleeting glimpses of a bat-like figure over the years. While there’s no proof the Jersey Devil exists, the legend continues to attract thrill-seekers and ghost hunters each October.
Not all hauntings are frightening. In Bernardsville, NJ, locals tell the story of Phyllis Parker, a young woman from the 1700s who is said to linger at the site of her family’s former tavern. Today, that building houses the Bernardsville Library, where visitors and staff have occasionally reported unexplained noises, objects moving on their own, and a warm presence that feels more playful than menacing.
Rather than being a source of fear, Phyllis has become part of the town’s charm. For history lovers across Somerset and Morris Counties, her story is a reminder that the past is never far away.
Head down to Atlantic City, and you’ll find one of New Jersey’s most famous landmarks—the Absecon Lighthouse. At 171 feet, it’s the tallest lighthouse in the state and a popular stop for visitors. But some come for more than just the views.
According to accounts from past keepers and modern visitors, the lighthouse is home to a ghostly presence. Reports include phantom footsteps echoing in the stairwell, muffled conversations when no one is around, and sightings of a lone man near the tower’s upper floors. Whether it’s imagination or something more, the Absecon Lighthouse has secured its place on New Jersey’s list of haunted destinations.
Ghost stories aren’t just about chills and thrills—they also highlight the deep history woven into towns across Northern New Jersey. From the Victorian homes of Montclair, NJ, to historic estates in Short Hills and Maplewood, every community has a past layered with stories of the people who lived there.
Living in a home with history doesn’t mean you’ll encounter a ghost, but it does add to the character and uniqueness of our neighborhoods. Local legends help us appreciate the generations who shaped places like Summit, Westfield, Chatham, Glen Ridge, and Madison. For today’s homeowners and buyers, it’s one more reason Northern New Jersey feels like such a vibrant and storied region.
Whether you’re captivated by tales of the Jersey Devil or intrigued by the idea of a “friendly ghost” in a neighborhood library, these stories are part of what makes New Jersey such a special place to call home. From Maplewood’s tree-lined streets to Morristown’s historic sites, every town in Essex, Union, and Morris County blends modern living with a strong sense of history.
If you’re considering buying or selling in Northern New Jersey this season, our team can help you find a home that’s the right fit—ghosts not included (unless you’re hoping for one!).
